Island raises additional $60M funding for its secure enterprise browser

Dallas-based startup Island, the developer of the security-focused “Enterprise Browser,” today announced an additional $60 million investment led by Georgian to continue its ongoing mission to provide for the security needs of enterprise users.

Georgian’s investment extends the company’s previously announced Series B funding round in March that raised $115 million led by Insight Partners, bringing the company’s valuation to $1.3 billion.

The company produces a browser product called the Enterprise Browser that embeds security models and requirements within the browsing experience itself. That allows users to have a familiar interface and experience while providing information technology teams centralized security control. Through embedding security and tooling into the browser itself, IT teams get last-mile security that’s directly baked in and can control everything about user experience so users can go about their daily lives.

Since the browser is a central piece of software that dominates the workplace and connects to the internet at large, it’s also where most networked apps also live. This also means that most security breaches happen there as well. Users go to their browsers to get their email, social media, calendar, updates and everything else throughout their day.

This includes employees who are on corporate campuses and employees who are networked remotely. As a result, the entire infrastructure of a company could be at the mercy of whatever is happening within an employee’s browser if a single webpage, extension or web app happens to have a bug, vulnerability or exploit.

“Companies continue to wrestle with ‘bring your own device’ as the norm, which creates risk,” Mike Fey, chief executive and co-founder of Island, told SiliconANGLE. “To manage the risk, companies are putting complex, expensive and poor-performing security controls in place like virtual desktop infrastructure and virtual private networks, and even shipping laptops to contractors in an attempt to mitigate this growing risk.”

All that, he explained, adds costs, complexity and delays, and it gets in the way of actually doing business. This is why IT and security teams need something that doesn’t get in their way and lets them control every aspect.

“Island is helping many of our customers tackle this major business challenge with simplicity, cost reduction and great user experience with the Enterprise Browser,” Fey said. “Contractors are able to simply install a browser on any device, authenticate, and get instant access to the apps and resources they need, and nothing else.”

The Enterprise Browser does this through support for built-in safe browsing, web filtering, web isolation, exploit prevention, smart network routing and zero-trust access. It can also protect proprietary information by providing a dashboard for IT to control last-mile options such as blocking copy, paste, download, upload, screenshots and other activities that could expose critical data.

Since the company’s launch earlier this year, Island has continued to expand its platform with hundreds of new features. They include support for iOS, iPadOS and Android, and complete support for operating systems including Windows, macOS, Chromebook and Linux.

In addition to this funding, Georgian will be bringing its own expertise in artificial intelligence to Island to accelerate product development for security and productivity for the Island Enterprise Browser.
