About this ebook

When her mother is killed by the crossfire in a gun battle in the city, Emma Rose Murphy has no choice but to accompany her aunt and uncle on their journey to Oregon. The trail is hard and full of hard people, but Emma Rose knows two things for sure. One, she's never going to fall in love and two, she will never be able to trust a man who carries a gun. When the handsome Noah Parker saves her from an unknown attacker in the dead of night, Emma Rose doesn't know whether to kiss him or run for her life.

Former Marshal Noah Parker knows all about evil. First a Pinkerton agent, then a deputy marshal, he is on his way to Oregon to start over, to forget the mistakes of his past. When the innocent Emma Rose needs help, he steps in. But his interest leads to scandal and he does what any honorable man would do...he marries her, hoping her acceptance will mend his shattered soul. With a serial killer fixated on Noah's new bride, will the gun-toting former deputy marshal be able to convince Emma Rose to trust him before it's too late? And even if he earns her trust, will her love be strong enough to heal the wounds he carries on his battered heart?

Heartbroken and war-weary, Emma Rose Murphy joins her aunt and uncle on the Oregon wagon trail to a new life. Having seen the destruction wrought by guns, she has a horror of them, and nightmares dog her nights. After two days on the trail, Emma Rose is ready to return to her home town but she has nothing to go back to. Ex-Pinkerton Agent Noah Parker rescues her from an attack on her person and becomes part of the family circle, but when he hears Emma Rose's sobs at night and goes to her, Emma Rose's Uncle Ryan comes to the wrong conclusion and forces a marriage between them. As it turns out, the young married couple is more suited than her uncle expected and their easy camaraderie raises questions. This charming, although slightly suspenseful story, depicts life on the trail and the difficulties experienced by the pioneers, as well as the simple joys and pleasures. Noah realised that although forced into marriage, he is not at all disappointed in the arrangement as his new wife is all he could ever ask for - if only she could get over her distaste for guns. It takes a number of unexpected situations for Emma Rose to finally come to an understanding that guns have a vital role in safety and protection. I loved Noah's strong character and his protective nature, whilst at the same time giving Emma Rose the respect she deserves. As a woman, one can identify with Emma Rose and the predicament she finds herself in, as well as her insecurities and self-doubt. I enjoyed this well-written adventure romance, a copy of which I received as a gift, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This story of Emma Rose and Noah and the supporting characters was so real. I got sucked in until the very end and would have loved to keep reading. It began with Emma Rose losing her mother in a senseless shooting and her fiance at the start of the war. She then sells everything and joins her aunt and uncle on a wagon train headed to Oregon City. Shortly after their journey begins, Emma Rose is forced to marry Noah. Their beginning is full of a few pitfalls, but they soon learn that their marriage may be everything they both wanted, just at a later time and not forced upon them. They make several friends from the wagon train as they travel along, plus they endure some hair-raising encounters before they reach their final destination. The ending to their story was a beautiful surprise and this book will go in my to be read again pile. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About the author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cynthia Woolf is the award-winning and best-selling author of fifty historical western romance books and two short stories with more books on the way. She has also published six sci-fi, space opera romances, which she calls westerns in space. Along with these books she has also published four boxed sets of her books.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia's father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy, not a bounty hunter, and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now), not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and her great critique partners for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.
