“The only reward for those who make war upon Allah and his messenger and struggle to sow corruption on earth will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be expelled from the land. Such will be their degradation in this world, and in the hereafter, theirs will be an awful doom.” (Qur’an 5:33)
The idea of “waging war against Allah and his messenger” is used in Iran as a catch-all charge for all manner of offenses, particularly those that manifest dissent from the regime.

Mere mortals “waging war” against a sky guy who could–we’re told–so easily smite them?

I had wondered how it was that the perpetrators of the Armenian genocide revived crucifixion – till I saw the quotation at the top of this article. Mind you, I don’t think the Romans crucified women, whereas Turkey did. I don’t know of any other faith that actually legitimises such behaviour. The position of the arms in crucifixion makes breathing difficult, forcing the victim to push him or herself up on nailed feet every time a breath is taken. And those familiar with the gospels will recall that Pilate was surprised that Jesus was already dead after only six hours.
