Kennisdeling is een belangrijke activiteit van NAT. De afgelopen jaren is veel onderzoek gedaan en kennis gedeeld over de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van aquathermie in Nederland. Met enige regelmaat wordt binnen het netwerk verwezen naar voorbeelden in het buitenland, bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van governance. Zo is het idee ontstaan om een grotere inventarisatie uit te voeren over wat er gebeurt op het gebied van aquathermie in Europa.
Doel en onderzoeksopzet
Het doel van het onderzoek is om inzicht te krijgen in de stand van zaken van aquathermie in Europa ten opzichte van Nederland. De bijbehorende onderzoeksvraag is als volgt geformuleerd: Wat gebeurt er in Europa op het gebied van aquathermie en wat is relevant voor Nederland om van te leren?
De informatie is verzameld aan de hand van eerder uitgevoerde onderzoeken, informatie verzameld op internet en input van het NAT-netwerk. “Er is super veel informatie te vinden op het internet, maar tegelijkertijd is deze informatie ook beperkt” vertelt Rowan Benning, verbinder Praktijk bij het Netwerk Aquathermie en uitvoerder van de inventarisatie. “Technische aspecten van een project zijn vaak vermeld, zoals de lengte van het warmtenet, de COP of de hoeveelheid bespaarde CO2 uitstoot. Maar informatie over hoe bijvoorbeeld de governance of financiering precies in elkaar zit, is vaak niet te vinden. Voor zulke details is deskresearch niet voldoende.”
Veel te leren van buitenlandse projecten
Het rapport laat een gevarieerd beeld zien van hoe aquathermie ingezet wordt in verschillende omgevingen. Zo gebruiken de Scandinavische landen en Frankrijk TEO van zeewater veelvuldig voor het verwarmen en koelen van gebouwen. Zeewater wordt in Nederland nog nauwelijks gebruikt. Een andere interessante bevinding is dat de Coëfficiënt of Performance (COP) van projecten vaak boven de 3 ligt. We kunnen dus veel leren over andere mogelijkheden en varianten voor de toepassing van aquathermie in Nederland. Daartegenover staat dat Nederland met kennis op het gebied van TED en lage temperatuur warmtenetten een koplopersrol in kan nemen bij de verduurzaming van de gebouwde omgeving.
Meer verdieping
“Ik hoop dat het rapport mensen inspireert. Het zou mooi zijn om met een aantal partijen in een vervolg samen te werken voor een verdiepingsslag op bijvoorbeeld ecologische effecten of governancemodellen. Neem vooral contact op als je hierin geïnteresseerd bent”, aldus Rowan.
NAT publiceert in het eerste kwartaal van 2023 een Engelse vertaling van het rapport om deze kennis over internationale projecten breder te delen.

There is a lot to learn about aquathermia in Europe
The Network Aquathermie (NAT) has made an inventory study of aquathermal projects in 12 European countries. For each country, we looked at how the current energy system works, what kind of aquathermal projects are already in place and, above all, what can be learned. The results are presented in a report.
nowledge sharing is an essential activity of NAT. Over the past years, research has been done and knowledge shared about developments in aquathermal energy in the Netherlands. Now and then, a reference was made to examples abroad, such a governance models in Denmark. So the idea was born to carry out a larger inventory study of what is happening in the field of aquathermal energy in Europe.
Goal and research set up
The research aims to gain insight into the state of affairs of aquathermal energy in Europe compared to the Netherlands. The associated research question is: What is happening in Europe in the field of aquathermal energy and what is relevant for the Netherlands to learn? The information has been gathered from previous studies, research on the internet and input from the NAT network. “There is a great deal of information to be found on the internet. At the same time, the details about the projects are limited,” says Rowan Benning, consultant at the Netwerk Aquathermie and executer of study. “Technical aspects of a project are often mentioned in the information, such as the distribution network length, the COP or the amount of CO2 emissions saved. But information about, for example, exactly how governance or financing works is often unavailable. Desk research is not sufficient for such details.”
A lot to learn about foreign projects
The report shows a great variety of aquathermal energy projects in different environments. We can therefore learn a lot about other possibilities and variants for the application of aquathermal energy in the Netherlands. At the same time, with knowledge about Thermal Energy from Drinking water (TED) and low-temperature heat networks, the Netherlands can lead on those subjects in making the built environment more sustainable. In Scandinavian countries and France, Thermal Energy Surface water (TEO) from seawater is widely used for heating and cooling buildings. Seawater is still hardly used in the Netherlands. Another interesting finding is that the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of projects is often above 3.
Next steps
“I hope the report inspires people. It would be nice to work with several parties in a follow-up to go deeper into, for example, ecological effects or governance models. NAT will publish an English translation of the report in the first quarter of 2023 to share this knowledge about international projects more widely.
