When it comes to helping people embrace their natural beauty, retail platform thirteen lune leaves no skin tone behind. The online shopping solution features an array of cosmetic products from brands founded by people of color.

Thirteen lune recently raised $8 million in a seed-plus funding round to expand its presence. This capital follows a year of substantial growth in which thirteen lune grew its sales by more than 2,000 percent year-over-year and announced a retail partnership with JCPenney Beauty.

On thirteen lune, consumers can shop a number of BIPOC-founded brands, including skincare brand Buttah Skin and actress Tracee Ellis Ross’ hair care company Pattern Beauty. From darker-toned makeup to curly hair treatments, the products featured on thirteen lune’s platform are designed to resonate with people of color.

In addition to its extensive list of beauty and wellness partners, thirteen lune’s marketplace features a brand of its own created by its co-founder Nyakio Grieco. Private-label brand Relevant: Your Skin Seen launched on the marketplace last year and helped fuel a notable increase in sales for thirteen lune.

Grieco and co-founder Patrick Herning launched thirteen lune in 2020. Since then, the platform has grown from its initial 13 brands to more than 160. Whereas 90 percent of the brands on thirteen lune are BIPOC-founded, the remaining 10 percent are ally brands working to expand within the inclusive beauty space.

“As a 20-plus year Black beauty entrepreneur, it’s an honor to shape the landscape of inclusive beauty, acting as an agent of change for BIPOC brand founders to receive recognition and opportunity,” Grieco said in a statement. “Our partners share thirteen lune’s mission to support diverse founders who have historically had fewer resources and opportunities to build a business and create generational wealth.”

Coming off an eventful year, thirteen lune will put its fresh capital toward expanding its footprint. This year, it plans to expand into 600 JCPenney locations across the nation. Additionally, it aims to open its first physical storefront in its headquarters city of Los Angeles.

Thirteen lune is backed by investors including The BrainTrust Fund and Fearless Fund.
