This animation shows the coordinated movements of the diaphragm (in red) and the ribs, in free efficient breathing. The lungs are not shown, otherwise you couldn't see the diaphragm movement. The lungs would sit on top of the diaphragm dome, and fill up the space under the ribs. Of course the heart, equally not shown, is in there too! The animation was made at the Stough Institute in New York. Stough was renowned for his ability to help people with breathing difficulties.
