She has a secret.

I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.

I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn't realized how far I could fall or what I'd have do to get free.

He has a secret.

I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.

I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.

Secrets destroy them.

**Pepper Winters is known for her Dark Erotica. This book is more a Grey Romance. It isn't fluffy, and still deals with darker subjects, but it isn't brutal.**

Destroyed is a complicated love story between a man with a terrible past and a woman who holds his cure. A man who finds redemption in love and a woman who loses her heart and reason for living.

Death brings life, and destruction brings new beginnings.

Complete at 144,000 words. No cliffhanger. Stand alone. HEA

Tortuously Dark & Romantic!

Tortuously Dark & Romantic!
I really wanted to read something by Pepper Winters after a few friends raved to me about her writing. She has an intimidating backlist of 30+ novels, including multiple series. I chose Destroyed because it's a standalone and one of her earlier works. I was in the mood for something with darkness and depth, and that's exactly what I got — I absolutely loved this torturously dark and romantic adventure! This story begins with Hazel Hunter, a 24-year-old single mother, struggling through a low point in her life. Having just received a terrible prognosis for her daughter's illness, she's barely holding on. Through happenstance, she meets Obsidian Fox, the mysterious and attractive owner of an illegal fight club, and enters into a bizarre agreement with him for an obscene amount of money — money she can use to seek every possible treatment for her daughter. What follows is a tumultuous and unpredictable relationship impacted by mental illness, deep emotional scars and a relentless sliver of hope. “𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞. 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐞.” I’ve met many tortured male protagonists in my reading journey, but Roan Averin, aka Obsidian Fox, gives almost all of them a run for their money. He is one of the most broken characters I've come across, and his journey is one I will not soon forget. His horrific past has shaped him into a person that is so warped and wounded, I found myself wondering how he could ever recover. On the surface he is a selfish, manipulative and aggressive man who moves through life in a maladaptive way, but underneath his harsh exterior is a somber desperation to overcome his inner demons. Hazel is a resilient and capable woman with her own tragic past and one of the most challenging obstacles in front of her as she tries to process her daughter’s condition. She becomes drawn to Roan's pain like a moth to a flame, compelled to try to help him despite the obvious risk. I could understand her unwavering saviour complex because many times I fell into it myself; I wanted to save Roan, too. I wanted the impossible to be possible. I wanted to comfort him and heal his wounds. Though their situation is unique, Hazel’s motivations are so relatable. “𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐝. 𝐇𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭.” Personally, I was frustrated with both main characters at points in this book, but I could empathize with them and understand the driving force behind their actions. They are flawed, raw and real, which is exactly what I look for in dark romance. Winters is definitely skilled at creating complicated characters and relationships! Their relationship is twisted and toxic, but it's also emotional, intense and so beautiful. “𝐈 𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝 **𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” This book has many tropes and elements that I love: single parent, tortured hero, forced proximity, and lots of trauma, drama and angst. But it's unlike anything else I've read. Though some aspects were predictable, I couldn't quite pin down the plot and I love when that happens. Winters' writing is unique and beautiful. It's very repetitive in this story, but it functions to reinforce both characters' persistent challenges and stuck points. I appreciated the poeticism in her words and the angsty narrative. Some aspects of the plot required me to suspend my belief beyond what I thought was realistic, and this is the only reason that my rating is less than five stars. Overall, I loved this book, I'm sold on Winters' writing ability in the realm of dark romance and I can't wait to read more of her work. I would recommend this to dark romance readers who love complicated characters with tragic backstories, toxic love, redemption arcs, and trauma-heavy storylines.

The most amazing thing about Pepper Winters is her ability to write stories that are completely different from each other. Destroyed was nothing like any of the other books I've read by Pepper. It showed these two imperfect people and how they fought to be together. There wasn't romance, Fox hurt Hazel more times then I can count. His past was controlling him and the whole time you wonder if they'll make it. It was intense and sad majority of the time because this connection between Fox and Hazel didn't help Fox move away from his past. I'm still processing this book and how I feel about it. I really did enjoy it. It took me longer than normal to read it but, I wouldn't say it was because it wasn't good. Every time I did pick it up I wanted to keep reading but, for some reason I had to fight myself to pick it up and read it and I think it's because I wasn't a huge fan of Hazel. I loved the secondary characters. Clara was beautiful. I wish I could have seen more of Clue and Ben and I would actually love to read their story. Oscar was interesting and I would have liked to know more about him as well. Luckily, Fox was an amazing character and I enjoyed finding out more and more about him as the story went on. He was intriguing and everything he went through was horrifying. I actually feel you really get to know Fox completely and instead of really understanding Hazel and feeling for her, I found her kind of annoying. So, although I truly enjoyed this book I did not enjoy it as much as her other books.

At first I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I always push through it, because when I'm surprised how much I end up liking a book and can't put it down, you know that author did a good job! This isn't my usual erotic-romance theme type, but the complexity of the characters in this book really intrigued me, and fell in love with them. It's dark and twisted, and so unconventional, and yet you still want to fight for these characters to be with each other, because they need each other. Loved it! This was my first read of the authors, and now I am intrigued to continue to read her other ones.

I don't even know how to put into words how much I loved this book! Sometimes I couldn't believe what I was reading and it's not often that I actually cry when reading a book, but I had tears running down my face more than once. My emotions were all over the place and I was so worried that there wasn't going to be an HEA! Pepper Winters has such an amazing gift for writing and making you feel everything that the characters are feeling. I highly recommend this book, as long as you don't mind romances that are dark and twisted.

I bought this book last night and couldn't put it down. It was what I was hoping for when I bought it – a romance with strong characters with dark pasts and a really great plot that kept you in suspense the whole time, constantly waiting for the next bomb to drop and watch the relationship rearrange itself yet again with each new truth revealed between the two. The only thing I didn't like at times was the dialogue – although I always felt like the characters were being true to their natures, I just couldn't imagine them or any two people saying some of the things the characters did, especially two people from their harsh backgrounds. But then, that's a minor flaw in comparison with the book's overall pacing and otherwise the story remained very true to it's dark, gritty heart and the way Fox and Zel (or Roan and Hazel, I suppose?) reacted to one another felt right on and understandable – Hazel retreating yet compassionate, and Fox remaining unrelentingly damaged despite everything. Definitely worth checking out.

I absolutely adored this book...it had all the elements of a dark read but it also had fragments of light and love throughout the book. I couldn't put it down nor did I want to...highly recommend this book.

Wow! Pepper Winter's books are always so great. Get ready for an intense, emotionally charged read.

When Roan sets eyes on Zel in his fighting club, something in his body physically changes. He's never wanted anyone, was trained not to, so he doesn't understand what's happening or what he's feeling. But he recognizes that she's different and knows their connection is too strong to ignore, so he'll do anything to get her, to keep her.

Zel didn't want to go to the fight club that night with Clue, her best friend, but she did. She's ready to leave when she spots Roan (a/k/a Obsidian Fox) across the room in a heated argument about to fight. He's stunning! He's dark and dangerous and she is drawn to him instantly. She knows she should run, but she can't seem to make her feet leave. Before she realizes it, he's there and he holding her arm and she can't believe the electrical touch and response her body has to him. Roan makes Zel a proposition she can't pass up. But she has secrets and she's told lies; but Roan has secrets of his own. Can they release the secrets and be the person to heal the other? How many secrets are there? And will some secrets be the breaking point? I'm being vague I know, but I don't want to give away too much information, because you really need to read it and experience it for yourselves. It will leave you breathless.

Roan was a beautifully broken man. His story about his past and struggles will break your heart. He wants so badly to change and to fight his demons. Finding Zel has given him hope for the first time in his life. I was as drawn to Roan as Zel, and I wanted to hug him just as badly as she did.

Zel is a strong character and has dealt with so much in her life. When she tells Roan some of her secrets, I was proud of her for FINALLY opening up. But she continued to hold back something very important and I wanted to slam my Kindle on her head! UGH! Infuriating woman! When he learns the truth, that scene.....there are no words.

This was a very emotional roller coaster of a book. It's got some dark elements, but it's more about overcoming a brutal past and living for a brighter future. It's a wonderful story of finding that one person who will understand you, stand by you and help save you. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. Please read this book!

I had been wanting to read this book for ages and just never had got around to it, I'm so glad I made the time. Yes I have given it five stars because the story was an epic one, and raw and emotional and yet very frustrating for me at times, but for the life of me I couldn't put it down. In my opinion the second half of this book was much better than the first part and the writing was impeccable as always.

Hazel is a born fighter in life, but some things just take us down and after some life changing news her life is unraveling slowly. On a night out with her best friend, she meets Obsidian Fox ( Roan) and for reasons she can't fathom she is pulled towards this beast of a man. He has a very dark past with problems no one can help him with, he is conditioned and damaged so badly it actually scared me. I couldn't find a connection to Fox at all, I honestly didn't like his character but Hazel on the other hand I quite enjoyed her, such a determined lady, strong yet loving and with a tragic past of her own I couldn't help but gravitate towards her. Fox felt the same - he wanted Hazel, she had made him "feel" and that hadn't happened in his life for a very long time. He makes her an offer she really couldn't refuse because of certain circumstances in her life at present and from then on she is enveloped into the dark dangerous life of Fox and what a ride of discovery we are taken on.

I really liked that as the book goes along we get to delve into both their pasts and how they have gotten to this point in their lives, it is told in duel perspective so we really get to know these characters very well. My heart finally started to melt a little where Fox is concerned because lets face it no one is immune to the kind of abuse and cruelty- mentally and physically he has been put through, my heart bled for his pain, but at times I really disliked him immensely and I couldn't see or feel any ending to this book, no hope peeked through the pages and this is where the frustration came in for me , and then WHAM - something changed - you will have to read the book to find out what and why but this was the best part for me. Then just as you think you have got this - it all falls down around your feet again and my heart once again was deflated and disappointed. I was angry, sad and immensely frustrated with the whole thing.
Hazel on the other hand was a bloody Saint in my mind to put up with all this and still go back for more, me - I would have run a mile and not looked back - thank god Hazel is a better woman than me !!

I'm not going to lie and say when I first started this book I didn't think was going to like it at all, but this story is so addictive that you have no choice but to read it and get totally involved in the lives of the characters, you HAVE to know the outcome of these conflicted, torturous people, you hold out hope with all your heart that the outcome is a good one but the path that leads to this is a shocking and disturbing one so be warned.

Another great book from Pepper but one that I will not be reading again and certainly not one of my favourites of hers, but on the other hand it is also one I will never ever forget and that says a lot about this author and her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darker than the devil himself
Reviewed in Australia on July 8, 2014

First, let me say that Roan is darker than the devil himself - hands down. Yet he's just as seductive, stealing inside your head because you understand where he's coming from. His violently stolen childhood and subsequent conditioning are nothing short of brutal. Yet he makes you feel that he deserves happiness - or at least the hope of it.

Hazel, whether she knows it or not, is looking for an out from her tragic life. I understand her despair at her circumstances, but I don't understand how she could just walk away from her responsibilities, when time is so important. Yet Roan is such a powerful character that he carries the story from the start.

Ms Winters' vivid writing made this story so real to me I actually had nightmares as a result for about a week afterwards. My almost-eight-year-old daughter having a My Little Pony movie marathon in the background as I read this book probably didn't help the situation.

No, the characters aren't normal people - their circumstances and their pasts mean that they can never be normal. But they do deserve a happy ending.

Superb writing that truly deserves five stars.

I already read "Tears of Tess" and really liked it but it's even better.

The characters are truly incredible and the violence is always lurking in a dark corner.
It's hot and cold, a blow then a caress, high and low ... a roller coaster of emotions.

What Roan does to Hazel is harsh, unforgivable and still... it's difficult not to be drawn to him. He was the bad guy, killed innocent people, was a monster but you can't prevent wheeping for the stolen boy. Forced in a world full of horror and conditioned to pose despicable acts. He is a product of the utmost violent upbringing and fights every day against his conditioning. It takes a very strong person to battle all the time against his inner demons and not succumb to the darkness and desperation.

Always in the dark, litterally and figuratively, Roan sees Hazel as his hope, his cure for freedom.
They both feel this strong connection but they will fight all along. Roan wants to possess her and to buy Hazel for one month. She has turned his world upside down, made him feel for the first time in his life.

Hazel is a survivor and a warrior at heart. She despises the offer to buy her services but she desperately needs the money to help healing her daughter.
She'll meet every assault of Roan, always fighting and will overcome trials no other human could endure and survive like she did.
She shines brightly, full of empathy for Roan, wishing to help him. But she must also protect her daughter and does not have the luxury to bring her life at risk. And yet, even assaulted by Roan, she comes back and forgives many times.

As for Clara, Hazel's daughter, she is wise beyond her age and broke my heart.

I cried a lot, for Roan, for Hazel, for Clara and had no idea what the end would be.
    Incredible!
