Involvement of relatives making it hard to stop girl trafficking

By Laxman Paudel,Bhairahawa, May 2: It has been found that relatives are involved in human trafficking and transportation. 

Police investigations have shown that there are increasing cases of relatives sending girls abroad luring them with various temptations and leaving them stranded there. Over the last five years, 115 cases of trafficking have been registered in Lumbini province. 

Police officers said that the involvement of relatives has made it harder to prevent heinous crimes like trafficking and transportation.

According to the police, women from other districts are also involved in taking them to Indian cities through the Belahiya border of Rupandehi and leaving them stranded. 

The police investigation has found that there has been an increase in the trend of getting stranded in India on the pretext of making more money there.

According to Umes Raj Joshi, Deputy Inspector General and Head of Lumbini Province Police Office, in some cases, because the victim did not tell more information about the broker, it was not possible to gather evidence and take the case to court. 

"The police have increased awareness programmes against illegal transportation and trafficking, but the chain of trafficking has not stopped," DIG Joshi said. 

In the current fiscal year 2079/80 B.S., 128 people were rescued from the border area of Rupandehi, while two people were rescued from different places in India and brought to Nepal. The people who were about to be trafficked were rescued in coordination with the police and an organisation called Maiti Nepal.

One person involved in human trafficking has been prosecuted. During this period, 6,940 people have been counseled in the border area. In the previous fiscal year 2078/79 B.S, 285 people were rescued from the border area and seven people were directly rescued from India. Maiti Nepal, which works against the trafficking of women and children, has kept its offices at various border points of the country to check human trafficking.  

Human traffickers from various districts of the country like Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Sindhuli have lured Nepali women and children and brought them to Indian territory through Rupandehi border.

In the case, Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Act-2007 is attracted and prosecuted according to law if found guilty.
