Hello! Apple, Amazon, and Coinbase were among others to announce their latest earnings today. Some quick notes:

Apple's services revenue, including from Apple TV and Apple Music, has reached new heights, helping boost the company's profits from a year ago despited shrinking revenue from weakening iPhone and iPad sales. The iPhone currently accounts for roughly half of Apple’s overall sales, compared with nearly two-thirds of revenue in 2016, per the WSJ. Per Bloomberg, Coinbase said its second-quarter loss narrowed and revenue exceeded estimates. The company's net loss narrowed to $97 million, or 42 cents a share, from a record $1.1 billion, or $4.98, a year earlier. Even so, the shares have more than doubled this year, partly thanks to a rebound in crypto prices in the first half of this year.

Strong online sales and signs that the slowdown in Amazon's cloud computing division has bottomed out boosted the company's sales and earnings well above analyst predictions in the latest quarter, as observed by the FT. CEO Andy Jassy also used today's earnings call to underscore just how much the company is investing in artificial intelligence. (Tim Cook took a different tack, meanwhile.)

GoStudent, a seven-year-old, Vienna-based tutor marketplace that had raised $686.3 million previously, has now raised another $95 million in funding from its backers. Among these is Deutsche Bank, Left Lane Capital, DN Capital, Tencent, Prosus, DST, Coatue and Softbank Vision Fund 2. The raise included a mix of equity and debt capital. TechCrunch has more here.

Kyverna Therapeutics, a five-year-old startup based in Emeryville, Ca., that is developing cell-based medicines for autoimmune diseases such as lupus, raised a $60 million Series B extension round co-led by Bain Capital Life Sciences and GordonMD Global Investments, with previous investors Gilead Sciences, Westlake Village BioPartners, Vida Ventures, Northpond Ventures, RTW Investments, Insight Partners, CAM Capital, LYFE Capital, and jVen Capital also participating. Toss Bank, a two-year-old Seoul neobank, is reportedly in discussions to raise a $154 million round at a $2.1 billion valuation by the end of the third quarter, according to TechCrunch. The bank previously raised the exact same sum this past March at a $1.6 billion valuation. TechCrunch has more here.

40Seas, a one-year-old Tel Aviv startup that provides automated financing for importers and exporters, raised $6 million, increasing the size of its seed round to $17 million. It also raised a $100 million credit line. Investors included Eminence Ventures and QED Investors as well as previous investors Team8 and ZIM. CTech has more here.

Amber Bio, a two-year-old San Francisco startup that uses Crispr gene editing tools to target RNA, which it believes has the potential to correct a broader variety of genetic disorders in a safer manner than DNA gene editing, raised a $26 million seed round co-led by Playground Global and Andreessen Horowitz. Other backers in the round included Eli Lilly, Retinal Degeneration Fund, Hummingbird Ventures, and Pillar VC. Forbes has more here.

Lula, a Miami startup that offers a range of tools, including risk management, claims management, policy management and access to insurance coverage, has raised $35.5 million in Series B funding. NextView Ventures and Khosla Ventures co-led the financing, which included participation from Founders Fund, Financial Technology Partners founder and managing partner Steve McLaughlin, Steve Pagliuca, co-chair of Bain Capital and co-owner of the Boston Celtics, and Nextera Energy. Dynamon, an eight-year-old startup based in Southampton, U.K., that specializes in developing advanced data analytics and simulation tools for commercial transport and logistics companies, raised a $5 million round from bp ventures. EU-Startups has more here.

Emtech, a four-year-old New York startup whose platform helps banks to prepare for regulators' testing requirements, raised a $4 million seed round led by Matrix Partners India, with other investors including BTN, VestedWorld, Equity Alliance, LoftyInc Capital, Level Up Ventures, and Collide Capital. Functional Finance, a two-year-old San Francisco startup whose platform enables insurance companies to automate checkout, financing, payables, and refund functions, raised an $8 million seed round (plus $2 million in SAFE notes) led by New Enterprise Associates, Walkabout Ventures, and Altai Ventures, with participation from C.V. Starr Insurance. More here.

Hologate, a 10-year-old Munich startup that provides extended reality technology for immersive entertainment products, raised a $9.1 million Series A round co-led by Bolero Holdings and Vester Partners, with Cherry Ventures also taking part. Silicon Canals has more here.

Hushmesh, a five-year-old startup based in Falls Church, Va., whose platform automates encryption key management for individuals and companies, raised a $5.2 million round led by Paladin Capital Group and including Akamai Technologies. More here.

Knot API, a four-year-old New York startup that enables card issuers to automatically switch saved payment methods at the request of their users, raised a $10 million Series A round led by Nava Ventures, with Plaid and Amex Ventures also anteing up. The company has raised a total of $13 million. More here.

Language I/O, a 12-year-old company based in Cheyenne, Wy.,  that says it provides real-time, "business-accurate" translation technology to allow companies to communicate internally and externally in any language, raised an $8 million Series A1 round led by Joint Effects, with Wyoming Venture Capital Fund, Gutbrain Ventures, PBJ Capital, and Omega Venture Partners also investing. Ozlo Sleep, a one-year-old Boston startup that has developed earbuds to help people sleep better, raised a $10 million Series A round. LifeArc Ventures and Artis Ventures co-led the transaction. Fast Company has more here.

Polars, a three-year-old Amsterdam startup that has built a DataFrame library based on the Rust programming language for data scientists and engineers, raised a $4 million round. Bain Capital Ventures was the deal lead. EU-Startups has more here.

Reflex, a one-year-old San Francisco startup that is building a low-code web app development platform based on Python, raised a $5 million seed round led by Lux Capital, with participation from Abstract Ventures, Box Group, Y Combinator, Picus Capital, and Outset Capital. TechCrunch has more here.

Revalue Nature, a one-year-old London startup whose platform helps financiers evaluate potential carbon projects, raised a $10 million Series A round. Ecosystem Integrity Fund and SJF Ventures co-led the deal. Tech.eu has more here.

Wisecut, a four-year-old Miami startup that has developed an AI-powered automatic video editing platform, raised a $1 million round. Tim Draper was the sole investor and sealed the deal on a napkin. The company has raised a total of $1.3 million. VentureBeat has more here.

Ribbit Capital, the fintech-focused Silicon Valley venture firm whose many bets include Brex and Robinhood, has raised $800 million for its tenth fund, according to a regulatory filing. Ribbit last closed a fund with $1.15 billion in 2022. The Information has more here.

NATO has raised more than €1 billion from certain member nations for a fund that will invest in deep tech startups, including those that are developing technologies that could have military or defense applications. Axios has more here.

KKR & Co is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire book publisher Simon & Schuster from Paramount Global for $1.65 billion. Reuters has the story.

Triller, the TikTok competitor, has long teased its ambitions to go public, and now, the short-form video platform is seemingly going for it. At least, it today filed an  S-1, seeking to directly list on the New York Stock Exchange. We'll see how far it gets. It previously tried to go public via SPAC, which was later scrapped; it also attempted a direct listing last year, which also didn't pan out. TechCrunch has more here.

Threads, Meta's Twitter rival, continues to lose traction after an impressive debut. Daily active user count is down 82% from launch as of July 31, according to Sensor Tower, with just eight million users accessing the app each day. That is the lowest it has been since the day after the app’s release when daily active users peaked at roughly 44 million, Sensor Tower said. CNN has the story.

Institutional investors have transferred about $8.1 billion outside of Israel during the first half of the year. This comes amidst Israel’s ongoing political unrest due to the government’s judicial overhaul, leading to significant underperformance of the local stock market compared to U.S. and European markets. Google is making it easier to find and remove personal info, along with explicit images, in its search results.

Union Square Ventures, long a top-performing fund, has this marked down the value of seven of its funds by nearly 26%, per investment returns for UTIMCO, which manages the $65 billion endowments of the University of Texas and Texas A&M systems. Some anticipate it will be the "start of a cascade" of lower valuations for venture funds, reports Insider.

But now erstwhile backer, Twitter haver and X lover Elon Musk appears to have taken the valuable domain off their hands, or else someone has done it for him: AI.com now redirects to X.ai, the billionaire’s embryonic machine learning research outfit."
