Teachers in Lithuania will stage a warning strike on September 15 and, if the desired results are not achieved, they will also walk out on September 29, the Lithuanian Education Employees’ Trade Union announced on Tuesday.
“We are not trying to do any more damage to the education process, but we just want to warn the government, and if nothing is done, then we’ll stage a real strike that could last even a month,” said Andrius Navickas, head of the trade union.
The union announced its plans to go on strike on Monday after meeting with Education, Science and Sport Minister Gintautas Jakštas.
The teachers’ demands include reducing the number of pupils in classrooms, raising wages, and improving working conditions.
The striking teachers will not go to work, while other forms of protest may also be used. According to Navickas, the strike could end if the teachers’ demands are met or a compromise is reached.
