Smoke Show: An Opposites Attract Romance (Campfire Council) Paperback – July 14, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Eve Pendleton moved to Campfire for a fresh start. She's agreed to help the town council with their bachelor charity auction, but hosting it at the high school is a no-go unless she agrees to co-direct the winter play with the principal. Brady Gleason is handsome, but awfully strait-laced for Eve's tastes. Besides, her fresh start didn't include plans for a new man… Can she make room in her heart and her new life for a man whose icy exterior hides a flame only she can quench?
Brady Gleason can’t stop thinking about Eve. Loud, chronically late, and generally a thorn in his side, she gets on his nerves—but her prickliness conceals a pain he can’t help but try to soothe. He’s learned the hard way that risk means loss. Can Eve encourage him to open his heart one last time if it means finding love?
Eve and Brady are both skeptical about happily-ever-afters. Will their budding romantic production be a one-night flop, or have they found the roles of a lifetime together?
Join us around the campfire, where you can pour out your troubles and seek solace in friendship and love.

About the author

Amelia Simone is the author of flirty, fun romances set in the Pacific Northwest, including Forbidden Flame (Book 1 of the Campfire Council Series), Formula for Love (Book 1 of the Excelling @ Love Series), and Mister Romance (Book 1 of the Self-Made Series.)
On sunny days, you can find her lounging on her deck, sipping coffee and working on her latest book. She specializes in writing lighthearted, hopeful romances that feature relatable, everyday characters who are looking for love. She's a firm believer in writing dessert books with plenty of sweet, flirty banter and teasing. Her goal is to deliver stories that give you a serotonin boost and leave you with a smile.
When she's not writing, she's wrangling her kiddos, indulging in food and wine adventures with her better half, or out back trying to revive her garden. (Hey, sometimes things die, it's fine.)

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023The story is fun and cute all the way until the end. Will keep you smiling. No dramatic break up and then get back together. Just a feel good read from beginning to end. Explicit sex and mature language.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2023This book can be read as a stand-alone book because the author does a good job referencing events that took place in the first book or character connections sufficiently to give a new reader a frame of reference or explanation to minimize confusion. However, I would still strongly encourage starting with Forbidden Flame to get the full context of some of the more nuanced comments.
Unfortunately, it took me much longer to get into the storyline with this book than it typically does because neither of the two main characters really appealed to me initially. This was like eating your vegetables so you can enjoy a tasty dessert. I was really intrigued by some of the potential character match ups that will be later books in this series, so I forced myself to read this book. While I wasn’t excited about this book, having finished it I can honestly say it was a pretty good read. It’s closer to a 3.5 rating, but the series as a whole is engaging and very entertaining.
My frustration with the book for about the first 35% is Brady comes across as a straight laced jerk. He’s all over admonishing Eve for being tardy to the high school play practices he strong armed her into helping with in book 1 so her friends could host a charity event in the high school gym. She is a self employed tattoo artist and is closing her business early several nights a week to VOLUNTEER and help him out without him ever expressing his appreciation. Mr. Principal needs to get over himself.
Another frustration is how the author kept hinting at major life changing events in each of Brady and Eve’s pasts that neither of them have worked through. Keeping the details secret and slowly sharing them as the characters mentally ruminate about those events is irksome and distracting. I’d rather be given a better idea of the event or situation to better understand why the character has emotional hangups or triggers that still impact them.
In this case, once you learn what happened in Brady’s past it’s really weird that not one person in the small town where everyone is in everyone’s business never mentioned what happened to him. Eve’s past event, while horribly painful and embarrassing, wasn’t her fault and she was the victim of a slimy individual.
The relationship between Brady and Eve grows slowly (they go on a few dates before things get spicy). Once they get past the snarky banter and become more flirtatious the reading experience drastically improves, but those first chapters of awkwardness and unintentional hurt feelings were a bit painful to get through.
I most enjoy the camaraderie between the group of ladies and the group of guys. I love the interplay and foreshadowing of future pairings and the continued mystery of who is sabotaging the council’s events. The sign battle between Gwen and Zander is awesome. I’m really looking forward to their book later in the series!!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2023Eve comes off as the goth girl with her dark looks, but if you could see inside, you'd see she's hiding something. Which is why she moved and is a newcomer to Campfire, but she found a great group of friends and is helping them to revive Campfire by helping with the Winter Warmth Auction. To be able to host it at the high school, Eve had to agree to help principal Gleason (Brady) with the winter musical. Brady is a pain in Eve's side since they don't seem to see eye to eye on this and hate each other. Although, there is a thin line between love and hate and the more time they spend together working on the play, the more they realize they don't hate each other. The closer it gets to the auction, the Campfire council hopes they have everything ready for it to go without a hitch, but will it? And when Eve's past comes back to haunt her, will she be able to stay or will she be on the run again?
I loved this book. It pulled me into the life of Campfire so much that I figured I must have missed a book (which I had) that I immediately bought and devoured. Can't wait for this series to continue. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2023Oh, I really liked this book! Eve is not letting what happened define her. Yes, she still feels the sting and shame of the lies and betrayal, but she has reinvented herself and is happily thriving. A small town was just the cure she needed. Business owner, a new strong group of female friends and being active in the community has made her bloom. Love is not on her radar. But an uptight principal throws a wrench into everything. Force to work Mr. Uptight, they both are carrying a secret... They have the hots for each other! It was cute to see Brady wear her down, and for her to let down some of those walls. This small town gossip mill actually wanted to see the couple together and not cause drama. I enjoy books where adults are actually being adults. There was drama but not this unrealistic middle school drama. Eve and Brady were both able to share their past hurts without someone "spilling the beans''! This book made me laugh and the steamy scenes were hot and not over the top. I enjoyed this from start to end and can't wait to see what is next in this small town.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2023Eve settled in Campfire after a terrible experience. She needed a new life and had friends in this small town. She had a tattoo parlor and some graphic design work that paid the bills. She was helping with set decorations for the high school play. Brady is the high school principal, and he did not have a good opinion of her. As they work together, they become attracted to each other. Eve has a past but Brady has his secrets too. This book is a lot of fun. Great characters who support each other. It is interesting to watch Eve and Brady at play practice when they try to keep their feelings to themselves.
