Today, Black Metal Daily is proud to partner with cult label Swarte Yssel to present the first explosive signs of life from a brand new project, hailing straight from the depths of the Netherlands – SUOL, the brainchild of duo J and P.

With their preternaturally gifted compositional and songwriting talents already well on show within Shagor, Ossaert, Dinbethes and Weerzin, the duo have now forged their shared passion for the local myths, sagas and historical stories of their home into a fresh expression – and their eponymous debut album is a compelling one. The pair dive headlong into folktales and dramatic events from past histories around the Zwolle and IJssel areas to craft the themes of the record, and to infuse further strength into the provincial magicks summoned, have decided to work with musicians from their local region exclusively.

Thus, supported on drums by Elschappij Tovenaere, on vocals by H and S and on spoken word by D, SUOL is born. Be spirited away as these six passages lead you on a compelling journey from Zwolle, across the IJssel river towards the Zuiderzee, past arsonist robber barons, shore devils, black shadows, devoured villages and strung-up murderers – and the track we are premiering today, ‘Slot van Voorst’, is the second piece of the album’s tale and the perfect entry point to these legends.

A mid-paced, deceptively deep composition overflowing with richly textured emotion and passion, ‘Slot van Voorst’ sounds like history. A history of men, almost lost to the annals of time, but that deserves to be given new life and remembered… stories that should remain told evermore. Regarding the inspiration behind the track, the band says:

“When diving into Zwolle’s history, P. and J. encountered a story about a very prolific family in the 13th century: Baronial family Van Voorst. The Barons Van Voorst were very ambitious, were feared by city folk and traders alike, and managed to build up their own independent area of power around Zwolle with all kinds of tactics to increase their wealth. Operating out of Slot van Voorst and earning their reputation of robber barons, this inevitably led to the clash between Baron Zweeder van Voorst and the city of Zwolle. This led to the city council calling in the help of the bishop of Utrecht, Jan van Arkel. However, Baron Zweeder van Voorst was not pleased with this and, hot headed as Zweeder van Voorst was, things escalated quickly with the arson of Zwolle as a result. ‘Ruiten ende roven is gheen schande, dat doen die heren al die besten van den lande.'”

Adorned with artwork by Artfromtheunderground, what is presented by this formidable pair is an undeniably powerful record that might just be the finest fruit borne of their collaborations. An upcoming release upon physical artefact is imminent, but for now… listen deeply to these tales, and be held fast in thrall by the timeless resonance of SUOL.

Slot van Voorst will be releasing on CD and digital October 27th via Swarte Yssel.
