California and New York have some of the highest costs of living in America—and the country’s priciest ZIP codes. In fact, the real estate platform PropertyShark just released its annual report of the 100 most expensive ZIP codes in the U.S., and nearly 80 percent of the nation’s costliest are located in either the Golden State or the Big Apple. The data also revealed that after a decline in home prices last year, the market regained its momentum, with a whopping 67 percent of ZIP codes experiencing an uptick in median sale prices. More specifically, a record-setting 15 cities clocked median sale prices of $4 million and above, while only 15 remained below the $2 million threshold.
For the eighth year in a row, the 94027 ZIP in the Bay Area community of Atherton has held onto the number one spot in the nation, with the median sale price soaring to just shy of $8 million. In second and third place are Sagaponack (11962) and Water Mill (11976), both in the Hamptons. Per the report, the latest median sale prices here were roughly $5.95 million and $5.88 million, respectively. Also cracking the top five was Miami Beach’s 33109, where the median sale price exceeded $5.75 million, and following closely behind was Santa Barbara’s 93108 with a median price of $5 million.
Meanwhile, the Southern California cities of Newport Beach and Los Angeles tied as the second-most expensive cities in the country, with both locales boasting five separate ZIP codes on the list. Newport Beach’s prime pockets teetered around the $4.7 million mark, while L.A.’s costliest areas were concentrated around Pacific Palisades ($3.1 million), Bel Air ($2.8 million), and Brentwood ($2.3 million). Los Angeles County as a whole remains the priciest in the U.S., with 18 of the country’s priciest ZIP codes.

The most expensive city of 2024 is located on the East Coast. New York City managed to keep the top position with a total of six ZIPs peppered throughout the list. Perhaps unsurprisingly, five of those were located in Manhattan, while the sixth was in Brooklyn. The most expensive ZIP code in N.Y.C., 10013, which includes parts of Soho, clocks in at number 23 with a median sale price of $3.36 million, while Tribeca’s 10007 shows up at number 43 and Greenwich Village’s 10012 at number 87.
Across the river, the state of New Jersey accounts for six out of the 100 most expensive ZIP codes across the country. Leading the pack once again was Alpine’s 07620, with a median sale price of $3.31 million. Other Garden State ZIP codes that ranked in the top 50 include Deal (07723), which landed in the 32nd spot, and Avalon (08202), number 41 on the list.
