Knox

I’ve lived and breathed hockey my entire life. As Captain of the New York Slammers, I live my

life the way I do on the bench.
Calm and in control.

Getting a top five defenseman wasn’t anything new, until he came strolling into the locker

room.

Now, nothing about my life is controlled, and I soon find myself in the fight of my life.

And his.

Asher

Getting traded to New York was never on my bingo card.

A chance to play for the best in the league.

Hockey was my only priority.

But then I met him.

He’s my captain. He’s off limits.

And I’ve always followed the rules.

Until now.

"He smells like the sweetest fantasy and dirtiest sin all in one."

It's no suprise that I love all of Heather's books. So when I found out that she'd be writing a new book and it was going to be MM romance, I was like YESSSS.

Then I found out it was going to be a series instead of a standalone. I was so excited.

Heather being my all-time favourite author and also my bestie from across the pond she finished writing it and sent me a message saying, "Wanna be reading knox and Ash?" I was like OH MY GOD YESSSSSS.

I literally started reading it straight away, and the prologue had me already tearing up.

Knox and Asher are now my all-time favourite characters. They're both just so damn amazing, and I just love how they started out as friends, then it turned into more.

Knox is the captain of the New York Slammers. He really likes Asher, but he knows he shouldn't. His past boyfriend ended up cheating on him, and he's not been in a relationship since. He was really hurt and never thought he'd ever be in another relationship again.

Asher is drafted to the New York Slammers and is staying in a hotel till he can buy his own place. But after he has a problem with the hotel he's staying at and the paparazzi constantly hounding him, he's stressed out, and Knox notices he ends up telling Asher why don't you move in with me. So he accepts and moves in with him.

Asher and Knox both like eachother alot and they know they shouldn't with being on the same ice hockey team. But the more they both live together the more they can't help having feelings towards one another.

Heather made me laugh out loud, swooning oh so much, saying WOW that's hot as hell, then I was shedding a few tears, having hand on the heart moments, then laughing some more, swooning loads more and then crying sad and then happy tears.

The epilogue was just perfection. Also Rose who's Ashers Gran was the absolute best ever. Reminded me a little of my Gran. I also loved the side characters too and I can't wait for their own books.

I’ve been waiting for another Heather Lyn book! And boy did Asher and Knox blow it out of the park! I fell into this story and didn’t surface until I was done. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series takes us! And I can’t wait for more from Heather Lyn!

Risky Shot was an amazing read! The love story of Knox and Asher is touching. Heather Lyn knows how to write from the heart and give you a twist you didn’t see coming.

I was so engrossed with Knox and Asher I had to finish in one sitting. I was there in the arena and in their home. I was apart of the friendship that transpired and was rooting for love to win out!

Asher never thought his new captain Know would end up being his best friend. He also didn’t think Knox was into him either. All while Knox was totally into him but didn’t think Asher was into him that way. They fall into their friendship so easily and those feelings changed. It’s so obvious to everyone else but they needed a little smack on the head to focus. Life enters their life bubble and tries to tear them a pet but their love is too strong and won’t let that happen. Don’t miss out on this amazing read.

This book deserves the five stars I give it for everything it made me feel ❤️‍🩹

Why did it make me cry so much? Am I becoming more sensitive? I don't know, but this book is definitely going to be one of my favorites. It is the first time I have read this author and I tell you it will not be the last as I already want the second book in this series.

Knox and Asher were spectacular, sweet, loving, I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THEM BECAUSE I LOVE THEM, you know that feeling when you read and you can't stop smiling? That's how I felt when I read the story of these two, Asher was transferred to the New York Slammers team where Knox is the captain, they feel an instant attraction but they do nothing and they become friends to the point that Asher goes to live with him in roommate mode, they fall in love little by little and so deeply. What about their families? By God, they are the most beautiful, how did they welcome them with open arms, and the team? everything I like to read about a found family.

Yes, they have a drama and I tell you that I CRIED, but they don't separate, they don't fight, they are THERE FOR EACH OTHER. Without a doubt this book is totally worth reading, read the tw since it has some themes that could be a trigger for someone, but I tell you, this book is totally worth the sleepless nights I spent reading it.

Thanks to the author and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review!!

---

(I received an ARC for this book)

Trigger Warnings include:
past/present moments of homophobia/homophobic violence & homophobic slurs (not between MCs), gun violence, PTSD, anxiety, grief, loss of a loved one, cheating (not between MCs) medical situations and sports injuries involving the hospital

My heart shattered in the prologue and then these characters continued to destroy my heart. In the best ways possible. Every emotion felt so raw, and I felt every single thing along side Asher and Knox. Asher is the team’s new guy, and in walks his captain. And their lives are forever changed. And, the best part, everyone around them knows it. Speaking of the people around them, I LOVED the inclusion of every one of these side characters! The teammates, Knox’s family, Asher’s Gran. Each other felt so special, and such an important part to Asher and Knox’s story. I loved spending time with all of them. But what I loved most was Knox and Asher’s time together. Their joking, just enjoying each other’s company. The build from strangers, to friends, to best friends, to so much more felt so genuine every step of the way. I loved that their attraction to each other was so much more than just about liking the view.

• “Once this starts, there is no going back.”
• “Who says you have to stop being my best friend?”
• “Be a good boy and make a mess all over yourself.”
• “I can’t wait to fucking wreck you and make you mine.”

• “I heard every single thing you whispered to me, and I locked them away for safe keeping.”

After reading the first chapter I was hooked on the story. I was rooting for Asher and Knox.

Asher has had to go through so much and he has had to give up so many people. So he finds it very difficult to open up. Knox has had a difficult relationship in the past and has not dared to enter into a relationship since.

They both fought this attraction for months, even after circumstances forced them to live together.
Knox is so sweet and pays so much attention to Asher and Gran. And this makes Asher want to go for it.

And at this point in the story I was getting so stressed and panicked! I thought, oh, I'm only 35 percent along and they're finally together and they're happy. There is still far too much to be done! I really put my kindle aside and panicked!

I was so happy to read that there won't be a third act breakup. But make no mistake... there are still many plot twists coming your way.

I thought this was such an overwhelming and emotional story. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read and review this book. I definitely think this book deserves 5 stars!

Asher & Knox's story is a dream! Their friendship, teamwork, and the brotherhood they have with the team all work together to make an enriching story. Stories like this are important - not only because it's about two men falling in love, but because of the way the other relationships are portrayed, too.

True FRIENDSHIP among men. The guys on the team goof around & are typical "sports guys" in the locker room, but also have some deep heart to hearts. True intergenerational friendship is portrayed between Asher's Gram & Asher, & Knox. True sibling friendship is portrayed, as well.

There are some hilarious LOL moments, lots of 🔥🔥🔥 moments, some suspense, some tears, and actual ice time!! I found it to be a well-rounded tale!

And I absolutely ADORE Asher & Knox individually & as a couple. Love how they crushed on each other while forming a sold best friend relationship that grew into romance.

Risky Shot is book one in the series and was a good read. Asher has just been traded to the New York Slammers, the best in the league. Hockey has always been a priority for him until he met his captain Knox, who should be off limits. Knox is the captain of the New York Slammers and is interested in Asher but knows he shouldn't get involved. After Knox invites Asher to stay with him due to a paparazzi issue at a hotel, the two grow closer and their friendship changes to something much more. The connection between them was undeniable and the chemistry was just perfect. I loved loved these two so much! And all of their friends and family were pretty amazing too!

Risky Shot was a great read! I was definitely wrapped up in the love story between Knox and Asher that I had to finish reading in one sitting! This is the first book I’ve read from this author and you can tell that she writes completely from the heart and gives you twists and turns that you wouldn’t see coming. I was drawn to the chemistry and intensity between the main characters and even though the story is filled with drama, it made for a great journey between the two. Overall, an amazing read that shows that love can be just as simple as that!

This M/M romance was so well written. The characters of Asher and Knox were so relatable even though I am not a man. I felt that their emotions were so realistic and the battles they faced were similar to what many have faced. While I have not lived their lifestyle, I felt such empathy for them. Their relationship and all the characters that surrounded them were just so developed. When I thought there could be no more, Heather Lyn surprised me and threw me for a loop in the most perfect way. Wow! This story is not to be missed.

His Forever…

Heather Lyn is a new author to me and I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book in this series! I was hooked from the beginning and finished this in one sitting!

Knox and Asher were sweet and steamy! The build up to them making their first moves toward each other was just enough angst to keep you turning the page looking for that first kiss.

“Risky Shot” is the first book in Heather Lyn’s highly anticipated “New York Slammers” series!! Her books are always filled with emotional scenes, close family connections and characters who quickly work their way into your heart. Asher and Knox were made for each other and when they first met, they danced around their explosive chemistry and were hesitant to take their relationship to the next level. To me, their future was determined the day Asher walked into the locker room to meet his new teammates. Knox was thrown for a loop by the intense feelings he had when he shook Asher's hand and he was not sure what to do about it. Asher was not one to shy away from his feelings and when Knox offered him a safe place to live away from the paparazzi, Asher knew that fate had stepped in to bring them together.

Asher and Knox are both very close to their families and I love the devotion Asher has for his nana and she plays an important part in his life! She is the grandmother we all wish we had; very loving, accepting and always there with a big hug and a smile. Knox’s extended family lives nearby and they were thrilled to witness the romance brewing between him and Asher. They just wanted Knox to be happy and seeing him smile warmly at Asher made them thankful that he had come into his life. The kindness they bestowed upon each other was heartwarming and when Knox had to deal with a life changing situation, Asher was there to hold his hand and reassure him that he would always be by his side. Life doesn’t always go as planned and for Asher and Knox, it would take their deep, undeniable love to get them through any obstacles that could threaten their happily ever after.

This book has so much potential but missed the mark for me. The writing was good, and I am very picky about that! But the relationship felt TOO perfect, Knox and Asher never argued and they talked about feelings so openly, it was like 2 social workers in a relationship rather than hockey players. And there were just things that were not believable, like that Asher was a virgin, supposedly because he didn’t have time for anything but hockey and his agent told him he couldn’t be with men. Buuuuuuut he’s supposed to be bi so it’s not believable. And how Knox’s leg was stuck out at a weird angle but it was just an ACL tear which doesn’t cause that. These things just took me out of the story. And there were several plot points that were left unresolved.
I’m confident that if this author keeps writing and tightens up her plot, they will be great!

You will absolutely fall in love with these characters from page one! They are so relatable and down to earth. This book takes you on a journey. This is way more then just a love story between Knox and Asher. It's about finding the one you love and acceptance from the family.
The thing is there's a lot of that Asher is dealing with. Hockey is his life. It saved him and brought him closer to his grandparents. His grandpa recently passed and he's dealing with being traded to his favorite team. With this move, it brings him closer to his grandpa and being the man he'd be proud of. From the moment him and Knox meet, it's kismet or fate. They just gravitate towards each other. There's a problem though, Knox is his captain. When he needs a place to stay, Knox offers his place up to him.
Knox is a gem. He's been in the league for 13 years and has been one of first to come out. So many people look up to him. He's been hurt by a relationship and has yet to move on..that is until Asher comes into the picture. The attraction is real and connection is strong.
What I love about this book is that both families of these guys are super supportive and loving towards them. Asher's gran is absolutely in love with Knox and gives him so much trouble over stealing her man lol. The hockey team is great as well. They are a big family who cares deeply about each other and accept their relationship with no issues.
While this book focuses on their love story, hockey and being a part of the family, It does have some stop your heart moments that just make you lose your mind and the tears just roll down your face. I read this book while at my job and that was a huge mistake. Trying to take payments and having tears coming down is not a good thing lol.
Anyway with these moments, it makes them rethink what is important in life and who they want by their side for that life. I swear the last 15% of this book will wreck you and bring you back to happiness.
This was my first book by the author and I will definitely be reading more from her.

Risky Shot is book 1 in the NY Slammers series. Boy oh boy (pun intended) it’s a good thing. it's a series because I’d be demanding one after reading this fantastic story. Aptly named with the way these characters slammed into my heart at a breakaway speed.
Cassidy: Is a family man through and through, whether it be by blood or choice, he will always have your back. He’s loyal, dedicated, supportive, hard-working, and captain of The NY Slammers. Knox Cassidy is the ultimate team leader. Oh, and sexy as all get out too!
Bryant: Family to the core, sweet, funny, flirty, and rather competitive. A force to be reckoned with. Rose Bryant will steal your heart. Oh, sorry you thought I was talking about Asher, her grandson? Well, I might as well have been, Asher Bryant very much takes after the amazing woman who helped raise him. And I might add that this beautiful man is a work of art, and oh so hot!
Some rough times and a trade to a new team sent Asher Bryant's life in a new direction. From the minute he set foot in the Slammers locker room, you could feel the connection between him and Knox. Not just as teammates or friends, but more. I laughed, cried, yelled, cheered, giggled, swore, swooned, wtf'd, sobbed, sighed, and grinned like mad. The chemistry with these two was off the freakin’ charts!! The back and forth, ups and downs, twists and turns, and intensity of this story were worthy of a Stanley Cup final.
Oh, and Heather Lyn, I'm sending you to the penalty box for cross-checking... and you know why!
I felt like I was actually there, a friend at Knox's house, a fan in the stands, part of the group chats, and the lucky fly on the wall in that wonderful locker room. I can't wait to spend more time with the new friends and family I have gained from Risky Shot! Chop chop woman! I need book 2 stat!

“Be sure, Asher. Because once this starts, there is no going back. We do this, I can’t go back to just being your best friend. I told myself I was okay with whatever I could get, as long as you were in my life. No matter the capacity. But I’m not strong enough to taste you for myself, and to not keep you afterwards. I can’t lose you.”

What you’ll get:
Professional hockey players
Rookie and Veteran player
Roommates to lovers
Gay and bisexual rep

Setting: New York & New Jersey

TW/CW: Grief, past homophobic violence, gun violence, murder, PTSD

After Asher’s bad agent who embezzled and was homophobic got fired, he still finds ways to mess with his prior client. He pays paparazzi to follow him to keep him uncomfortable. Asher ends up moving into his team captain, Knox’s, huge house to keep from getting harassed and away we go. They become fast friends and more quickly.

Asher doesn’t have much in the way of family and has a beloved grandma and that’s it. He’s still trying to figure out how to move on from his biggest fan’s death (his grandpa) and it’s done a real number on him. He doesn’t seem to be doing things for himself, just things to honor a memory.

Everything went suspiciously well for a long time and then it imploded all at once. I was expecting the bad agent to be a bigger player but it ended up being a red herring off to the side.

I did enjoy it but I did lose steam in the middle when they were in the honeymoon phase.

RISKY SHOT started out strong with some great interactions between our new teammates, Knox and Asher, but by the 35% mark they were in a relationship, hopelessly devoted to each other, and ready to go all in. There's pretty much no relationship angst (which I don't mind) and for a lot of the book it was just seeing them date and finding their rhythm as a couple.

I liked both Knox and Asher a lot and I was happy that we didn't really see too much of an issue with them being together. Knox was already an out gay hockey player and their team and family was completely supportive of them as a couple. But then the last third of the book hits and there's a bunch of external drama with a massive tone shift from light and fluffy contemporary to suspenseful near-tragedy when a problematic ex shows up.

Also, while I know that most of the men in gay romances are often not written realistically, there was something about this book that felt too much like idealized gay men written by a woman. I can't put my finger on a particular thing, it was just the overall characterization and vibe.

Content Warning: minor moments of grief over past death of a grandparent; brief recounting of being beaten up after coming out as bisexual

Heather Lyn is off to an amazing start with book one in the New York Slammers series, RISKY SHOT. Star defenseman Asher Bryant is traded from the New Jersey Huskies to the New York Slammers. He is excited to play for his late grandfather’s favorite team. Hockey has always been his focus. He never planned on being attracted to the New York Slammers Captain Knox Cassidy.

I love this story. Asher has had a tough go. He was raised by his grandparents. His grandfather recently passed away. His grandmother and he struggled with the loss. His agent was stealing from him.

Knox is a veteran. He comes from an amazing family. He hasn’t been in a serious relationship since he discovered his high school boyfriend cheating on him.

Knox and Asher become best friends. Both are attracted to each other but clueless that the other feels the same way. The two face some heartbreaking situations. RISKY SHOT had me laughing and crying.

This is the first book that I have read by Heather Lyn. I loved her writing style and plan on continuing to follow the New York Slammers series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Entertaining but meh

I’m a sucker for a good mm hockey romance and in some ways this book delivers. But this book is confusing in its attempt to have every cliche in it at one time.

The book starts off strong with a little backstory and some fun instant attraction between the two MCs. The descriptions of them playing together and becoming friends flowed fine but sometimes the dialogue or descriptions of their actions just felt weird or out of character. I might have been able to get past that if it was the only thing but as the story continued the plot just got too ridiculous.

Crazy ex drama? ✔️
Injury drama? ✔️
Family member drama? ✔️
Miscommunication drama? ✔️
Life threatening drama? ✔️
Virgin MC!? ✔️

It was too much. I get the temptation to include it all but the book would have been better with half the drama and at least 100 pages less. In the end I just couldn’t take it seriously anymore and found the characters a bit unrealistic.

Let me start by saying this book was not the light teammates to lovers hockey read I thought I was going to be getting, but I’m not mad at it, lol. This deals with some pretty heavy topics, so I wanted to put that out there. For those that love sports romance, the hockey part is there, and it’s great. These two love their team and their teammates. They’ve fought hard for the game they love. Asher is the new guy, determined to prove himself. Knox is the veteran and captain, hoping to stay in the game and not be taken out by injury. They’re surrounded by a FABULOUS cast of characters, and I can’t wait to have stories for several of them. The hard parts of this one were so much easier because these two had the friends and family surrounding them that they did. This is a journey definitely worth taking… I can’t wait to see who’s up next.
