From one of the panel discussion I took home some messages:- 1. Jennifer Leason we need community engagement to do research and importantly we need community led work. For example with research on maternal health in Indigenous community we need to ensure the work is Indigenous research led. When looking under the microscope to investigate scientific questions "whoever is doing the looking gets the power to define" the knowledge and discoveries. We need to restore balance and to rely on Indigenous wisdom once again and ensure sovereignty of the data. 2.Bukola Salami, RN, PhD Race and Racial discrimination does not live in isolation so we have to account for other forms of discrimination for example income, gender and community discriminations to make transformative change. 3. Linda Kongnetiman-Pansa Ph.D., RSW (AB, BC, ON), CCP In Canada it has been reported that Racism is a social determinant of health, so we need to address the fact that those who self report that they have experienced racism are also found to have poor health outcomes compared to others in the population not experiencing racism. Addressing racism is a step towards better well-being 4. Kimberle Crenshaw when we look through an intersectional prism we start to see the complex structures that individuals are in that and how these structures make their multiple identities relevant. Once we see these complexities, we can start to find solutions to complex issues. So many more lessons to process from the two days but I needed to get some thoughts out.

Numbers talk for itself. Catering and targeting the Hispanic / Latino in the US mean capturing the business opportunity of the 5th largest economy in the world! You can expect a sustained growth considering Hispanics/Latinos contribute to over half of US population growth every year.

The event will highlight the findings from an upcoming report (co-authored with the Latino Policy Forum) that studies Latino wealth, assets, and debt in six states (Illinois, California, Texas, New York, Florida, and North Carolina). The event will have welcoming remarks from Tonantzin Carmona Fellow at the Brookings Institution and she will also moderate a panel with speakers, Noel Poyo Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Economic Development, Sylvia Puente President & Chief Executive Officer of the Latino Policy Forum, and Joel Scantlebury President & Chief Executive Officer of Living Cities. The event will also feature remarks from Sen. Back in 2019 myself and colleagues in the Challenging Racism Project conducted a national survey in collaboration with the Thought Leadership team at the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia. Titled 'What Next for Diversity?', our project surveyed over 2,000 Australians to understand what they were thinking and feeling in regards to social, economic, political and environmental issues. Part of this, was understanding Australians' trust towards each other and various groups and institutions. We found that overall, Australians are trusting of their neighbours (74%) and people of another religion (67%). In contrast, three-quarters (74%) of the sample have some level of distrust in key institutions (government, media, political parties). However, trust varies across different types of institutions. Late last week our peer-reviewed paper 'Understanding Trust in Contemporary Australia Using Latent Class Analysis (LCA)' was published in Cosmopolitan Civil Societies. The research presented in this paper responds to the urgent need to better understand the contributing factors to ongoing public distrust in institutions and interpersonal contacts. It contributes a typology of trust, and the development of trust measures, to facilitate a more nuanced person-centred understanding of trust in Australia. The LCA uncovered four classes based on levels of trust as well as associated demographic profiles and attitudes. The four groups were: those that are very distrusting (15%); those that are largely unsure about how much they can trust various groups and institutions (17%); those that are somewhat trusting (42%); and those that are largely trusting (26%). The largely trusting group was differentiated by their holistic trust in institutions and trust in other Australians (no matter their background). Discomfort with cultural difference was a defining characteristic of the very distrusting class. To our knowledge, our study is the first of its kind to utilise LCA to understand trust in the Australian context. Examination of these four groups will help us understand the concerns of Australians and enable the development of strategies to address institutional and interpersonal distrust.
