The Iranian Mohammad Jafer Mahallati has had a good long run as a professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Oberlin. But now his past has caught up with him. As Iran’s ambassador to the U.N. between 1987 and 1989, he defended the Islamic Republic against charges of mass murder of 5,000 political prisoners. He called for a “global jihad” against Israel. As a teacher at Oberlin, he sang the praises of Hamas, and attempted to brainwash his students to do likewise. And along with all this, his involvement in a sex-for-grades arrangement at Columbia has just been made public, and now there is the distinct possibility of his facing charges of rape by a student at Oberlin. More on Mahallati can be found here: “US professor who called for ‘global Jihad’ on Israel, supported Hamas suspended,” by Benjamin Weinthal, Jerusalem Post, January 14, 2024:
Oberlin College suspended its so-called “professor of peace” from his tenured position after it was revealed that the US Department of Education launched a probe into his antisemitism. In November and December, Iran International and the New York Post reported that Mahallati sexually harassed a student.
Mahallati liked to call himself the “professor of peace” at Oberln (if only the faculty and students had known the truth) as he sashayed about the campus as the Nancy Schrom Day Professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies. For several years, Iranian dissidents have been trying to get Mahallati fired from Oberlin. They have adduced evidence that as Iran’s ambassador to the U.N. between 1987 and 1989, Mahallati deliberately lied to the General Assembly, claiming that 5,000 political prisoners who were murdered by the regime were in fact “battlefield soldiers.” It was during his tenure at the UN, too, that Mahallati called for a “global jihad” against Israel. Until this past fall, the Oberlin administration stoutly defended Mahallati against those charges, but finally the campaign by Iranians in the U.S. became impossible to ignore; the evidence was too strong that he had indeed lied about the mass murders in Tehran, and he was stripped of his teaching duties in November, but remained on the faculty until he was finally suspended this month, after a series of other offenses, having nothing to do with Iran, came to light — his record of sexual offenses, including what may become a charge of rape of a student at Oberlin.
The dual American and Iranian citizen, Mohammad Jafer Mahallati, was formally stripped of his teaching post in November. The Jerusalem Post was the first news organization to report on the Iranian dissident campaign to oust Mahallati in 2020 for his alleged crimes against humanity.
By defending at the UN the murders of 5,000 Iranian political prisoners, denying the accusation and claiming that the killings being discussed were of “battlefield soldiers,” Mahallati himself could be considered an accessory to that “crime against humanity.”
In late September, the US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced an inquiry into alleged rampant antisemitism at Oberlin College. “OCR will investigate whether the College failed to respond to the harassment of students based on national origin (shared Jewish ancestry),” wrote the OCR.
Mahallati has a long history of stoking genocidal antisemitism, including calling for a global jihad against Israel during his tenure as Iran’s ambassador (1987-1989) to the UN.
According to Melissa Landa, a 1986 Jewish-American graduate of Oberlin College, who filed the OCR complaint in 2019 against the small liberal arts college, “Through his lectures and reading assignments, Mahallati glorifies Hamas and teaches his students to do the same. He also delegitimizes Israel by characterizing the Jewish state as a settler colonial endeavor.”…
In glorifying Hamas, recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and more than forty other countries, Mahallati should be considered unfit to be teaching young Americans, just as membership in the Ku Klux Klan or the American Nazi Party would, I assume, be considered as disqualifying someone from a teaching job.
Amnesty International and the Alliance Against Islamic Regime of Iran Apologists (AAIRIA) accused Mahallati of using his position as the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassador to the UN in 1988 to cover up the regime’s massacre of 5,000 Iranian dissidents in the same year.
Lawdan Bazargan, an Iranian-American human rights activist who oversees AAIRIA, told the Post, “In the past 3.5 years, President Carmen Twillie Ambar and the Board of Oberlin College have displayed a concerning level of hostility towards our campaign and the families of the victims. This behavior serves as a stark example of inadequate leadership. Instead of addressing our concerns with sincerity, the administration resorted to spreading baseless rumors, labeling us as ‘right-wing Trumpists,’ ‘Islamophobic,’ or ‘agents of Israel.’ They intended to stifle our calls for justice and accountability.”
The President of Oberlin and the Board of Oberlin College rejected the evidence presented by Iranians of Mahallati’s defense of mass murder when he served as Iran’s UN ambassador. It’s impossible to comprehend. Not only that, but to make matters worse, they carried on a campaign of vilification against these Iranians for bringing up the evidence against Mahallati, and among other false charges, claimed — in true antisemitic fashion — that the Iranians were “agents of Israel.”
AAIRIA has requested that Oberlin College create a memorial for the victims of 1988 mass murder and set up a curriculum to educate students about the dangers of Islamism being comparable to Soviet communism and fascism….
It would be fitting if the school that allowed Mahallati to remain on its faculty for more than 30 years, and for years fought against those who demanded his firing, should make amends by erecting a memorial for the very Iranians whose murders that same Mahallati denied at the UN. And still more useful would be new course offerings to teach students about the totalitarian menace of undiluted Islam, what some too hopefully call “Islamism” and have convinced themselves is different from Islam. It would be wonderful if such a course could be offered, but I suspect that shrill cries of “Islamophobia” and law suits threatened by CAIR might keep such a course from being offered.

“…I suspect that shrill cries of “Islamophobia” and law suits threatened by CAIR might keep such a course from being offered.” It seems that almost all of the so-called major colleges appear to be examples of cowardness. The only way to fight these sub-human degenerates is to stand strong in the face of lies.
I am tempted to say that I don’t understand why this purveyor of anti-Semitism and hatred of truth was not outed long ago and placed on a list of people unfit to step into a classroom but I cannot and that is disheartening. I hope that these institutions that once believed that truth is to be found through an examination of the object and not persuaded by bigotry. I am probably just dreaming.
