THE RACE TO BUILD THE BEST GENERATIVE-AI PLATFORM FOR FASHION DESIGN A new wave of start-ups is building tools that take the capabilities of the market’s top generative-AI models and tailor them to fashion’s specific needs. Among them is Raspberry, which just raised $4.5 million in funding from a number of big-name backers. Practically from the moment AI-powered image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney blew up, their potential for fashion was clear: They could allow designers to produce photorealistic renderings of their ideas in moments with only a text prompt. But powerful as they were, they were general-purpose tools for conjuring full scenes, not individual garments, which left them with shortcomings as design programmes. You couldn’t simply edit colours or details without regenerating an entire new image, and they weren’t set up for designers to easily infuse their stylistic DNA into the output. A new wave of start-ups is building generative-AI tools tailored to fashion’s specific needs, hoping to make their software part of the way designers work. Among them is Raspberry, which just raised $4.5 million in a funding round led by big-name backers Khosla Ventures — the first outside investor in OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT — and Greycroft Partners, which has backed companies such as goop and The RealReal. Other investors that participated included Michael Mente, co-founder and co-chief executive of Revolve; Yael Aflalo, founder of Reformation and now principal at Daughters Capital; the family office of the Fisher family that founded Gap Inc.; Fernbrook Capital; Correlation Ventures; and MVP Ventures. Investment in generative AI surged in 2023, and while most of it went from tech giants to a handful of major AI players, smaller companies building enterprise applications have also attracted funds. Urbanic secures 150 million US dollars to boost AI design London-based fashion brand Urbanic has successfully secured $150 million in a series C funding round led by Mirabaud Group Lifestyle Impact and Innovation Fund, D1 Capital Partners L.P. Partners, Jam Fund, and other global investors, along with support from European luxury fashion families. The funding will expedite Urbanic's growth and the expansion of technology-driven and socially responsible fashion designs. The brand, founded in 2019, focuses on blending innovation and responsibility by leveraging AI and machine learning to systematically generate fashion designs and improve overall supply chain efficiency. FRENCH AI-BASED SIZE RECOMMENDATION TOOL KLEEP RAISES €1.8M Fashion Network French AI-based size recommendation solution Kleep, launched in June 2023, has raised €1.8 million in a funding round to help accelerate its growth. Kleep also intends to use the capital to develop its own product search website. The funding round involved several investors, including David Dayan (CEO of showroomprive.com), Laurent Grosman (co-founder of Celio), Philippe Berlan (CEO of La Redoute), Rachel Chicheportiche (former president of Jérôme Dreyfus), Olivier Schaeffer(COO of Le Printemps group), Eric de Bettignies (founder of Advancy), Rossella Blatt (former head of AI at Levi’s and Nordstrom), HR consultant Chantal Baudron, and Irani Ventures, the venture capital fund of Israeli fashion e-tailer Factory 54. Kleep was created as a start-up in 2021 by Federico Fortis and Théophile Bousquet, and currently has 20 fashion labels as clients. Its technology helps them minimise returns from online clothes purchases, which are often motivated by sizes and cuts at odds with the customers’ body shape and expectations. Kleep’s AI-based solution is potentially able to halve return rates, and to improve conversion rates by 15% to 25%. “While existing sizing solutions are based on the customers’ approximate measurements and on generic garment information, Kleep’s algorithms are able to make size recommendations tailored to each product and body morphology, and to each customer’s personal preferences,” said Kleep.
