Washington Heights and Inwood Landmarks Survey

Dear neighborhood partners and residents of Washington Heights and Inwood,

We would love to know which sites in your neighborhood you'd like to see recognized as candidates for preservation. The Historic Districts Council (HDC) is working with Manhattan Community Board 12 to identify buildings worthy of preservation in Washington Heights and Inwood (155th St. - 220th Street between the Harlem and Hudson Rivers.)

HDC is the citywide advocate for all of New York City’s historically, culturally, and architecturally significant neighborhoods. We work directly with people who care about our city’s historic neighborhoods and represent a constituency of more than 500 local community organizations across all five boroughs.

Washington Heights and Inwood are underrepresented when it comes to New York City landmarks and historic districts, and we believe both neighborhoods deserve their fair share.

HDC and CB12M will use this information to create a list of preservation advocacy priorities in Washington Heights and Inwood that we can bring to the attention of local elected officials and the Landmarks Preservation Commission for designation as Individual Landmarks (single buildings), Historic Districts (groups of buildings), Interior Landmarks (publicly accessible interiors), or Scenic Landmarks (Parks, Parkways or other green spaces).

Please fill out this survey including as much information as you know about the building or area (block, neighborhood, park, other) you are suggesting. The more information you can provide, the more robust an argument we can make on behalf of the building or area.

We are particularly interested in understanding the significance of the places you suggest. Please focus on, and provide details to support, the historical, cultural and/or architectural significance of the site you are suggesting, as it relates to your neighborhood or to the city.

Please feel free to submit multiple responses to this survey if there are several buildings in your neighborhood that you'd like to see landmarked.
