A mammoth tusk has been found in Klaipėda District, in the Seaside Regional Park.
The exact site of the discovery is a cliff between Giruliai and Karklė known as the Dutch Hat.
“A miracle! The Dutch Hat gave a mammoth tusk! In the past, they gave a mammoth pelvis, a part of a rhinoceros vertebrae, a wild horse’s tubular bone,” the regional park’s management said on its Facebook account on Monday.
The tusk was discovered by a visitor, it said. Last week, he saw a piece of a tree branch sticking out of the sand on the beach in the wave battle zone but when he pulled it out, the find turned out to be a piece of bone.
The man reported the find to the head of the Archaeology and Restoration Department of the Museum of Lithuania Minor, Roma Songailaitė. She confirmed that a mammoth tusk might have been found.
On Monday, the Regional Park’s specialists, the Museum’s staff and animal bone morphologist Linas Daugnora excavated the site and found parts of the tusk and a tusk marker in the organic structure.
Daugnora confirmed that the tusk, which was found to be about 55 cm long, belonged to a mammoth.
The find was taken to the Museum of Lithuania Minor. The tusk will be conserved and exhibited there in the near future.
The plan is to carry out research and determine the time when the mammoth lived.
There are about 50 mammoth bone discoveries in Lithuania, the most famous being the Vilnius Mammoth, where a large part of the skeleton was found.
