Despite Hungary's current formal presidency over the European Union, Brussels and many member states are distancing themselves from its diplomatic activity, highlighting the complexity of European politics.
Hungarian Foreign Ministry chief Peter Szijjarto attended a conference on Eurasian security in Minsk. This conference, which brought together representatives of countries such as China, Iran, and Syria, is a platform for discussing security issues in the Eurasian region. At the event, Szijjarto sat next to Russian diplomatic chief Sergey Lavrov.
Speaking as one of the keynote speakers, Szijjarto once again said Hungary opposes sanctions against Russia. He called for building bridges and warned Europe would become more dangerous without dialogue.
Radio Svoboda reported that the conference was attended by representatives of countries with close ties to Moscow. Politico, commenting on another visit to Minsk by a politician with regular visits to Moscow, noted that Budapest's growing affinity with Moscow is causing increasing concern among its allies, highlighting the tension in European politics.
The media noted that Szijjarto began his speech in Russian.
Ahead of the Minsk meeting, the politician posted on Facebook:
- We are not the only ones in Europe who believe that Eurasian cooperation should be restored, but we are brave enough to speak openly about it.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka also spoke at the conference, which organizers intend to be an alternative to the Munich Security Conference, traditionally criticizing the West and the unipolar world.
