Blanche Lazzell and the “Independent Women” of Provincetown: Queerness and Networks of Printmaking - Presented by Zygote Senior Program Manager & Art Historian, Brittany M. Hudak "For this talk, I will be examining the LGBTQ+ printmakers that gathered in Cape Cod in the early 20th century - including Blanche Lazzell, Ethel Mars and Maud Squire, Mildred McMillen and Ada Gilmore, and Edith Lake Wilkinson, among others. The networks of artists moving between American Art Schools and the ateliers of Paris, as well as the influence of Japanese prints and new techniques of woodblock carving, all synced in the summer of 1915 in Provincetown. Before the age of computers, artists traveled by word of mouth - making associations with like-minded individuals, traveling together, supporting each other, and teaching each other new techniques and ideas. In this world of artistic and economic privilege, some were able to openly express their sexual proclivities - and Provincetown offered just that, a space of possibility, rather than limitation." Recorded on Wednesday, March 24th at 6pm EST. Copyright Zygote Press, 2022 For bibliography, please click here: https://zygotepress.org/lazzellbib
