He was dog-reactive and very strong, but fortunatelywe learned of no-pull head harnesses (Halti, Gentle Leader) that made it feasible to walk DENVERsafely & comfortably in public spaces. It is so crucial to be able to safelyand reliablycontrol any dogwe set out to walk, especially adoptable dogs we are still getting to knowas PAWvolunteers and fosters. Specially-designed, humane body-and head-harnessescanprovide invaluable protection for dogs and humans alike.Because these devices are pretty different from conventional collars and harnesses, you will want to review the detailed instructions provided w/ the products which can include demo videos on the company websites. It is a bit of atime& training investment, learning to use self-correcting head/body harnesses and gettingthe dogacclimated. But you will be rewarded with safer andmoreenjoyabledog walks as a result! Two more considerations:these devices can help facilitatebroadertraining endeavors; and large or strong-pulling dogs might be more easily placed if prospective adopters see that they can be safely and easily walked with aharness designed for this purpose.Below is a good review article on the topic. –Vicky Balenger (volunteer since 2003)6 Best No-Pull Dog Harnesses [Hands-On 2025 Reviews]
