Change Energy
Last week, CBC News published an article on vehicle "bloat," a timely piece that addresses an important issue: https://lnkd.in/gH9fdZG5. All else held equal, smaller vehicles weigh less and, therefore, consume less fuel and emit fewer GHGs. However, the article suggests that the GHG emissions regulations for vehicles encourage automakers to up-size their models. At Change Energy, our perspective differs; we would say that the regulations do not reward vehicle downsizing. It's helpful to view the regulations not as an emissions standard for vehicles, but rather as a 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥. Compliance with the regulations requires automakers to incorporate advanced, fuel-saving and emissions-reducing technologies and designs into new models such that all fleets, regardless of vehicle size, are proportionately less fuel consuming and GHG emitting. This means that makers of big SUVs and makers of small cars, alike, each face roughly equivalent technological challenges in complying with the regulations. Thus, the regulations do not advantage automakers specializing in smaller vehicle models at the expense of those invested mainly in building large vehicles – put simply, they only require all vehicle fleets to be progressively more fuel efficient than would be the case in the absence of the regulations. Migrating drivers toward smaller and lighter passenger cars and away from light-duty trucks for the purposes of daily commuting should benefit society economically, environmentally and, importantly, in terms of public safety. But as a technology-forcing policy, the GHG emissions regulations for light-duty vehicles do not help or hinder this objective. Complementary measures are needed to realize these additional advantages. Using the U.S. example, the video below ⬇ by the The International Council on Clean Transportation sheds some light on the effect of such regulation on vehicle models and benefits to the public. #fuelefficiency #ghgemissions #lightdutyvehicles #cars

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants: The lack of new vehicle inventory has been a significant driving force in the Canadian automotive market since shortages first became apparent in Q2 2021. These shortages have largely been alleviated and inventory has, overall, begun to normalize. But the surface level picture does not capture the full story. As we do every year, DAC reached out to the new vehicle dealer community through our friends and colleagues at the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association. Amongst the many questions we asked, we explored where inventory levels are at present, and the distribution of opinion regarding both ZEV and ICE vehicles. When asked about ICE vehicles, the plurality of dealers, at 43.1%, cited that they still did not have enough inventory. A further group of 32.6% cited that they had the right amount of inventory, with the smallest group, at 24.3%, stating that they had too much ICE inventory. When asked about ZEVs, a similar group at 31.4% of dealers cited sufficient inventory but for these vehicles the largest group, at 44.4%, cited that they had too much ZEV inventory. A further 24.3% stated that they did not have enough ZEVs. “Whilst dealer inventory is by no means a prerequisite for sales success, dealer opinion regarding ZEVs and ICE stock levels is certainly interesting” commented Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC. He continued, “Consumers are increasingly pushing back against higher priced vehicles and as the ZEV focus shifts from eager early adopters to a more hesitant general market, the path forward will be challenging.” Overall, dealers cited an average inventory level at 88.4% of their normal pre-pandemic baseline. However, the path back to one hundred percent may not be the road taken going forward, as many OEMs have indicated a preference for lower inventory levels compared to pre-pandemic practices. Whether they possess the discipline to pursue that goal as the market slows remains to be seen.

Q224 ZEVs made up 12.9% of all new motor vehicle registrations in 🇨🇦(🆙 37.9% from the same period last year). 65,733 new ZEVs registered, >51% in Quebec, likely owing to big demand prior to incentive reductions. Great timing to discuss how we get to the next level at the Electric Mobility Canada EVVE conference in Halifax. https://lnkd.in/gAUcFyu6

Vicinity Motor Corp., a British Columbia-based manufacturer of electric buses and trucks, is in receivership. The move was triggered last month as the result of a court order following Vicinity’s failure to repay its loans. Vicinity owes loans in excess of $22 million to the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). It’s entire board and several of the senior management team have resigned and the company has been delisted on NASDAQ. The news underscores that it’s been a difficult year for many companies in the electric vehicle manufacturing sector. Vicinity’s receivership comes on the heels of Lightning eMotors declaring bankruptcy at the end of 2023. Proterra followed suit this past spring and off-road EV manufacturer, Taiga, this summer. Export Development Canada (EDC) has also been drawn into the receivership saga as the guarantors of Vicinity’s debt to RBC up to US$22.5 million. PwC was appointed Monitor of Accuride Canada Inc., an Ontario-based subsidiary of Michigan-headquartered vehicle parts manufacturer Accuride Corporation, on October 10. In addition to various financial and operational issues facing the Accuride Group as a whole, the company is facing its own unique challenges that have negatively impacted profitability and cash flow including, among other things, a decade of losses at the London plant, high labour costs, an extensive overhead structure, a declining demand for the company’s products, the migration of customers away from Canada and the northern US, decreased competitiveness relative to peers, and GM’s refusal to renegotiate contract prices, which have become unprofitable due to rising material and labour costs. Bennett Jones is on for the monitor, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP for Accuride Canada Inc. and Kirkland & Ellis for Accuride Corporation. Read more: https://lnkd.in/geN-xNqR

THAT'S A WRAP! Thoughts on Hannover Messe 2024 It was a privilege for Accelerate-Accélérer to help organize Canada’s EV supply chain delegation at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE, the world’s largest and most important technology and manufacturing trade show. Despite the immense scale of the event and the tens of thousands of participants from all over the world, it felt like we were part of a small city, where progress and ingenuity were on display at every turn. Here are some of my key takeaways: 💶Canada is open for business The focus and determination of the companies in our group to build or expand global relationships was something to behold. Scaling Canadian vehicle component, battery and materials firms sought and secured meetings with large global players and worked 15-hour days to make sure they told their stories to the right people. 💡Canadian problem solving was on full display In each of the twenty or so exhibition halls (all of which were the size of a major airport terminal), there were robotic arms or some other impressive tech. It was heartening to see so many smart people from around the world thinking through how to address big challenges. From #EV tech to electronics to #AI, our country was well represented and anyone walking through the Messe would have been impressed by the entrepreneurialism and ambition on display from Canada. 📲AI can be practical Media coverage of AI can make it seem like the only bankable applications for the tech are limited to chatbots or camera phone images. Ask the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) though and they’ll show you in real time how their proprietary AI detects and corrects possible imbalances to ensure their rare earth processing remains consistent and pure. Or ask ProEV, a division of Electrical Components International how the technology can be applied to quality control in manufacturing through their KonnectAI platform. ⤴️We’re going to need a bigger hall! Because of the hard work and collaboration between Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and NGen Canada, Canada had a large and very impressive showing this year. Next year, Canada’s going to blow it out of the water as the PARTNER COUNTRY for Hannover Messe 2025. This will be an enormous opportunity for innovative Canadian companies across a number of sectors to showcase their solutions to global investors and purchasers and we’re looking forward to once again leaning in to help tell the Canadian EV industry story.
